Der Tod seines Freundes Albert Einstein im Jahr 1955 erschütterte Albert Schweitzers bisherigen Apolitismus zutiefst. Er entschied sich, aktiv in den Kampf gegen das Wettrüsten einzutreten – Seite an Seite mit Persönlichkeiten wie Karl Jaspers, Pablo Casals und Alfred Kastler.
Vor genau 68 Jahren, am 23. April 1957, richtete Schweitzer über Radio Oslo einen eindringlichen Appell an die Öffentlichkeit: Er forderte die Großmächte auf, die Atomtests zu stoppen. In den 1950er und 60er Jahren verließen unzählige Briefe sein Hospital in Lambaréné (Gabun) – auf Französisch, Deutsch und Englisch wandte er sich an Freunde und politische Entscheidungsträger, darunter US-Präsident John F. Kennedy und Bundespräsident Theodor Heuss.
Die Collage aus sorgfältig ausgewählten Zitaten aus Texten und Briefen gibt eine lebhafte Diskussion über den Weg zu einer friedlicheren Welt wieder und ermöglicht zugleich einen kritischen Blick auf den Zeitgeist der 1950er Jahre. Abgerundet wird der Abend durch musikalische Begleitung am Klavier.
